‘Exo’ stands for the “satellite space” beyond the domain and the range of that which is immediate, familiar and directly visible [1]; it is beyond the narrow disciplinary competencies, institutionalised knowledge, frame, control and appropriation [2]; it is the extended field of cross-disciplinary integration and collaboration, the field of the research challenges and realisation on multiple levels.

‘Exomilieu’ thus is not just any kind of the existing, expected, easily experienced or predominantly built context over-saturated with all the socially constructed identities; its physical aspects are basic, superior to such significations, immaterial or at the scale of the matter which has more subtle effects on our sensory mechanisms.

Reacting on and uncovering these layers of space, ‘exointelligentinstrument’ is its temporary mirror – ‘eye’ – at the same time the spectator and active performer, both external/privileged and internal/inherent, distanced/metacognitive and mediating/diagrammatic agent; through technological integration of human and superhuman features, a creator of the new cosmography.[…]

[1] including everything outside of the optical “window” considering the electromagnetic and sonic spectrum, as well as outside of the geosphere (exosphere and outer space) directly subjected to different laws and regulations (The Outer Space Treaty); but it can also take a more general meaning regarding the broadest application of this concept.[2] It involves a complex set of actors – national, international, and supranational; governmental, intergovernmental, non-governmental and commercial – within which different interests should be recognised.

…………………………………………..

Based on the author’s project “Global Eye(s): Sensing and Monitoring/Observation Technologies, Instruments and Architecture”, “Frequencies: The Invisible Spectre”, and studies on cross-disciplinarity in architectural theory and practice from the Doctoral Thesis ”Scripts and Codes of the Architectural Design Process: Disciplinary Borders and Transfers’ (particularly focused on integration and common ground of architecture, mathematics, physics, geography, astronomy, philosophy, arts, science, design and engineering) the work ‘exo’, being the part of the Design Research Lab initiative, develops and questions the topics of comprehensive sensing, intelligent technologies, automated control, satellite monitoring and architecture of information (datascapes) as integrative elements of architectural spatial concepts, objects and systems (methodological remote/close-up sensing triangulation), as well as the themes on cosmic space and the scenarios conveying the ideas of their research as the context and a trigger of innovation through application, advancement and new discoveries in the previously mentioned fields.(‘Personal remote/close-up sensing instruments and architecturally integrated networks’).[…]

Inquiring the questions of prototyping (conceptual, semantic, object design and sci-fi prototyping methodology) and machine-software-architectural design/engineering integrative approach (within the field of design science and design research methodology), ‘Exo’ is an ‘instrument’ (‘architecture-mechanism/machine’) which, working across the wide range of frequencies, registers and identifies chosen contextual parameters, processing and making them operative for architectural formal integration, research, scientific and artistic problematisation. Active physical fields and different activities within the environment are brought to the level of intelligibility, precise measuring, and high-tech artistic and aesthetic interpretation, anticipating adaptive automation and control planned for the last phases of the experiment.[…]

The ‘instrument’ (in comparison with the notions of the ‘installation’ or the ‘machine’) implies the higher degree of sophistication, precision, refinement and design/engineering attention that follow functional, operative, analytical, structural, or aesthetic registers of design problem-solving under the conditions of their mutual contingency.[…]

The story [scenario]

A near future in which all the citizens of the world will have their own personal satellite (following the theory of the shift in global monitoring from a condition of a panoptic systemic control, or one “global-eye”, towards the system of numerous singular, autonomous, and independent “eyes” (Van Houtum, 2011) put to the scale and the ownership of “one” is presumed as a starting condition. The instrumental pair – a launching line/terminal (a home device in one modality, and a station/facility in another) and a free-flight microsatellite (the “eye”, the “mirror”, the “wanderer”), operating across the wide range of frequencies – makes the infrastructure each individual uses daily. The provision of information they enable (by monitoring and observation, detection, image processing, etc.) is navigated and demanded personally. The exclusiveness of the territory in which they reside or which they occupy (the “zone”, the “free space”), and their exclusive right to perform actions, give them in the least peculiar status that still needs to be properly investigated and defined. Dynamics and elusiveness of their spatial regulations and properties intensify the ambivalence of their impact on the architectural interpretation and spatial (b)ordering. “Outspacing the law” (Easterling, 2014), infrastructures of comprehensive sensing and sensory technologies are being thought about by design in a completely new manner, at outmost as very architectural/spatial objects, installations, and instruments, or as being architecturally integrated acquiring thereby the status of one of the new architecture’s constitutive elements.

“This question of how to represent that which must not be represented is one of the oldest questions in art.”- Trevor Paglen

Zasnovan na istraživanjima autorskog projekta “Global Eye(s): Sensing and Monitoring/Observation Technologies, Instruments and Architecture”, studije “Frequencies: The Invisible Spectre” i istraživanjima interdisciplinarnosti u okviru doktorske disertacije “Scripts and Codes of Architectural Design Process: Disciplinary Borders and Transfers”, izloženi rad (‘exo’), u funkciji elementa pilot projekta Design Research Lab inicijative, razvija teme upotrebe obuhvatnih senzorskih i inteligentnih tehnologija, automatskog digitalnog upravljanja i monitoring, i arhitekture informacija (‘datascapes’) kao integrativnih elemenata arhitektonskih prostornih koncepcija, objekata i sistema (metodologiju ‘remote/close-up sensing’ triangulacije), odnosno teme kosmičkog prostora, ‘sf prototipizacije’ i scenarija (David Johnson, 2011) u funkciji konteksta njihove primene, podsticanja invencije ili buduće projekcije (“Personal remote/close-up sensing instruments and architecturally integrated networks”). Kosmički prostor – njegov fizički poredak/zakonitosti i interakcije, ‘logos’, objekti (prirodni i artificijalni), istorija ili savremena infrastruktura i tehnologija – predmet su stalnog istraživačkog interesovanja, kulturalne i umetničke interpretacije, pokušaja precizne naučne identifikacije i razumevanja, i kontrole u pogledu dostupnosti, mogućih aktivnosti i eksploatacije (“The Outer Space Treaty”, 1967). Naš neposredni kontekst je istovremeno i njegov mikrouzorak i društveno, kulturalno, intelektualno i tehnološki označeni autonomni sistem. Terestrički i kosmički instrumenti namenjeni opservaciji, regulisanom praćenju i konstrukciji slike ili interaktivne reprezentacije sveta, odnosno napredna tehnologija i moduli integrisani u njihove sisteme, problematizovani su u ravni režima dostupnosti i prelaska u svakodnevnu individualnu ili personalizovanu upotrebu, a zatim i u pogledu pouzdanosti, verodostojnosti i poverljivosti posredovanih podataka, njihovih vizuelnih interpretacija i korekcija.

Istražujući pitanja prototipizacije i integrativnog mašinsko-softversko-arhitektonskog dizajn i inženjerskog pristupa, ‘exo’ je instrument (arhitektura-mehanizam/mašina) koji, funkcionišući u širokom frekventnom opsegu, registruje i identifikuje kontekstualne parametre, procesuirajući i čineći ih operativnim za arhitektonsku problematizaciju i integraciju. Aktivna fizička polja okruženja dovode se u ravan racionalizacije, preciznog merenja i visokotehnološke umetničke i estetske interpretacije, odnosno kontrole i adaptacije u krajnjim fazama eksperimenta.

‘Instrument’ (u poređenju sa pojmom ‘instalacija’ ili ‘mašina’) može uputiti na viši stepen sofisticiranosti, preciznosti i dizajn, inženjerske ili projektantske pažnje koje prate funkcionalno-operativne, merne (analitičke), produkcijske, strukturalne i estetske registre projektantskog problema u međusobno interaktivnom modalitetu. Kritički razmatrajući predlog ovog formata u ravni ekspresije i komunikacije ideja (Jackendoff, 1996 in Zlatev, 2006:336-338), prostorne intervencije i projektovanja, odnosno njegovu aplikaciju u novim disciplinama i digitalnom registru, postavljen je izazov savremenoj teoriji, naučnim i umetničkim praksama, epistemologiji i metodologiji u pogledu njegovog temeljnijeg promišljanja, definicije i interpretacije. Oslanjajući se na tradicije i savremene pristupe sličnim složenim eksperimentalnim poduhvatima (E.A.T, Morozov, Peglen, Leitman, etc), ispitivanje datog prostornog formata (‘inteligentnog instrumenta’; Mathews, 1970s) na arhitektonskom planu implicira sintetizujuća arhitektonsko-tehnološka rešenja u mehaničkoj/dinamičkoj, senzorskoj i informacionoj ravni.
