The gilding of a square meter of a gable wall, a square precisely lit with an artificial light source. The liminal condition of the surface which should have held a drawing, now it ceases to exist. Instead of the drawing itself, we question the surface on which it materialises. The neutral whiteness of the paper or the textured “imperfect” surface of the wall are equally tangible, material, equally “usable” and ready to bear a drawing. Also, one can “draw” with light, but can the surface upon which we draw become light itself? Gilding is a technique, which was throughout the history of art and architecture, used as a means of dematerialising a wall, to abolish it’s architectural meaning, to erase it. Gold represents the divine, atemporal, something that does not belong to the material world. An image created on gold is just a symbol of a divine presence, something that is outside of our time and space frames. Shining light upon a square of gold, we invoke the symbolism of gilding as a means of dematerialisation, while at the same time we refuse to think of it as otherwordly and timeless. The symbolically “dematerialised” surface exposed to light, an electromagnetic radiation, indeed receives a layer of immaterial. The superposition of gilding and light is the superposition of symbolic and physical. We substract the material medium of the drawing from the dematerialised surface, and inscribe the immaterial medium of light. In a certain way we are correcting a mistake in logic — on an immaterial surface, one cannot intervene materialistically.

This Town Needs Posters is a platform for experiments in analog print and similar techniques which was started by Hrvoje Spudić and Sven Sorić in 2012. For the work they have been awarded in Zagreb and Belgrade. They collaborate with instances from the independent cultural scene, and have exhibited and lectured in most of ex Yugoslavia.
Pozlata jednog kvadratnog metra zabatnog zida, kvadrat precizno osvjetljen umjetnim izvorom svjetla. Liminalno stanje plohe koja je trebala primiti crtež, a sada to prestaje biti. Umjesto samog crteža propitujemo površinu na kojoj on nastaje. Neutralna bjelina papira ili teksturirana “nesavršena” ploha zida jednako su opipljive, materijalne, jednako “iskoristive” i spremne nositi crtež. Također svjetlošću se može “crtati” no može li ploha po kojoj bi se crtalo postati sama svjetlost? Pozlata je tehnika kojom se simbolički, kroz povijest arhitekture i umjetnosti, pokušavalo masu zida dematerijalizirati, ukinuti njena arhitektoničnost, izbrisati je. Zlato predstavlja božansko, atemporalno, nešto što ne pripada materijalnom svijetu. Prikaz koji je na zlatu nastajao samo je simbol prisutnosti nečega uzvišenog i božanskog što ne pripada našim okvirima prostora i vremena. Obasjavajući kvadrat zlata kvadratom svjetla pozivamo se na simboliku pozlate kao postupka dematerijalizacije, dok istovremeno odbijamo je smatrati onostranom i vanvremenskom. Simbolički “dematerijalizirana” ploha izložena svjetlosti, elektromagnetskom zračenju, dobiva sloj zaista nematerijalnoga. Superpozicija pozlate i svjetlosti je superpozicija simboličkog i fizičkog. Dematerijaliziranoj plohi oduzimamo materijalni medij crteža i priprisujemo nematerijalni medij svjetlosti. Na neki način ispravljamo logičku grešku — na nematerijalnoj plohi se ne može intervenirati materijalistički.
